  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer. -- Awesome : Great book, very interesting 👍 ( Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from H.P. -- Amazing! : If you have ever been curious about the dark and shadowy world of intelligence and special operations, if you have ever wondered how a handful of intelligent, driven, and empowered men could change the combat environment, read this book. A no holds barred look at one of the most secret, and most effective, special operations units out there. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2015 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dave Walkabout -- Great book on the early days of 'the troubles' : I have read quite a few books on British Military involvement in Northern Ireland. This one is set in the early 70's, and gives the author's version of his recruitment, selection and deployment with the MRF. He also goes into some detailed operations of alleged operations conducted against the IRA, which are not 'over the top' believable and comparable to some of the more recent books on undercover operations in Northern Ireland. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and it is well worth the price. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Daniel Jankovic -- Five Stars : Wonderful book! ( Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2016 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Paul Harbinson -- Very biased. : very biased. From one who grew up in Belfast he has no universal view of the situation that eventually grew into the troubles. sounds like the author would have been trigger happy in any situation. sad really. People like him added to the troubles, they did not provide any solution. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2014 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Graham -- An interesting read. : I skipped over a lot of pages due to the author going in to details about the various weapons being used. The action parts however held my attention throughout the book. All in all an enjoyable read. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Geoff Bradley -- A Fantastic Read : I have read a lot of books about the troubles and this is one of the best. dealing with a real life and death situation the author tell probably the first informed story on the subject in a manner that just keeps you reading. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2014 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Paul -- Epic Book! : This is a fantastic book and great insight into the demanding job carried out by the best if the British Army during the troubles. As ex Army me self having served over the water I found this book both interesting and easy to read. Definitely reconnect it to both military and civilian alike. Great buy. Well done Simon ( Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2013 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Alan. -- Didn't read beyond the first few pages. : When just a few badly written pages in I read that the author thinks that Northern Ireland consists of five counties added to his having followed a car around Belfast city centre (which is tiny) for half an hour I came to the conclusion that here was somebody who knew practically nothing about NI and was keen to prove it. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 12, 2019 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Patrick W. E. Walker -- Interesting book of the darkest of days of the Troubles : !4th Int, The Det, FRU, MRF, Z Company, The Igoe Gang, SRR, whatever you call them, the same heroes doing the same job whether its 1920 and 1972, saving lives and giving justice to the IRA's victims. It was especially interesting when he mentioned many places I was familiar with. There is a great deal of disquiet in these reviews, some from IRA supporters sore at being the losing side as always, some from their leftie fellow travellers but most from people who are sceptical as to the veracity of his story. To that I would say remember this was the very early days when everything was chaos and folks were making it up as they went along and the opposition was a lot slacker, hence the huge number of contacts he had. . ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 24, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from IAN C. -- The most honest account : Having served in NI in 72 & 75 I know from personal experience the situations and dangers involved. Although I was selected and completed part of the training before being RTU’d on medical grounds, I have no doubt that the author has been there, done that, and got the T shirt. And this is the most honest account of the unit. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 31, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Facts : It is easy to see why there could never have been peace in Ireland with this carry on by ruthless killers with a license to shoot to kill. Without Britain's interference, Catholics and Protestant's would have sorted our their own problems. The so called " lower Classes" on both sides of the divide were deliberately kept uneducated, largely unemployed and subdued by greedy politicians and the authorities to be used as cannon fodder while they feathered their own nests. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 17, 2022 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Charlie 564 -- A superb read. : As a former Infantry Soldier for many years, and serving in the Province during this period, it has brought back so many memories. I well remember the Big Lad getting shot through the legs & his mate who later tried to lift him and couldn't, Sy's mate who was shot in the cellar (he still attends some Reunions, Sy. He finished as a Major). Interesting to hear the REAL stories of the rumours from so long ago. A great insight into that shadowy world and scary time we all experienced a lifetime ago. Good man for getting a second career that you seem to enjoy. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 27, 2016 )
