• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Brynn -- Must Read for Young People & Adults Alike : This book is a must read for young people and adults alike, especially as it covers an integral part of history that is glaringly absent from our education system. The author, himself a member of the Osage Nation and a father, shares the stories of many Native Americans in chronological order of when they lived. Each chapter is a short biography and details a life lived especially as the influx of white colonists disrupted and devastated natives’ lives. As unjust as much of this history was and continues to be, it’s a well-written and responsible book to share with young people. It educates readers, young and old alike, with honest stories that will empower them to understand a dark chapter of history/past while also introducing native contemporaries like Deb Haaland, who offer much hope for a brighter, more inclusive, barrier free, future where native histories and cultures are cherished as they should be. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Nick Brokaw -- A must-read, correct-history for learning young minds : Where do I start? Mr. Beason's book is a wonderful blend of historical facts of both distant and recent indigenous individuals of significance and the important+accurate facts around the events of their lives. What I love most about this is that its easy enough for a young child to understand, yet is not watered down nor omits the crucial realities of these historical figures. Each chapter ends in sections "Think it through" which engages the reader to further think and ask questions; reflecting upon and furthering the research beyond the chapter! I encourage any/all people to buy this book, read it to your youngest children, encourage them to read it themselves and bring to school for book-reports, gift it to their friends etc etc. I can't wait to read what Mr. Beason writes next; its so important that indigenous authors have a direct path for their stories to be available to the world which sorely needs them. I love the representation and that the book doesn’t just cover the most famous of Indigenous People though I don’t understand why people like Dr. Susan LaFleche aren’t covered in public schools not just for the fact that she was Indigenous but she was a female doctor in the late 1800’s. I wish books like this were around when I was a child living in urban America wishing so desperately to hear that people like me could become something more than what I could imagine. There is a great deal of detail in the stories, which may be challenging for younger readers. This is a comprehensive book of lives from the initial contact with Europeans to the Space Age. The importance of this book is that it contains people from after 1890, showing the lives of Native Americans as human beings. I recommend this book.
